One
of the greatest joys of working in school nutrition is the
people we work with, the people we work for, and the school
community we serve. At the same time, perhaps the greatest
challenge of working in school nutrition is the people we work
with, the people we work for, and the school community we serve.
The problem most work teams
face is not that people can’t do their jobs. More common is that
people don’t get along with each other – resulting in tension,
disappointment and diminished productivity.
We’ll begin by reviewing definitions of personality and
behavior, and then focus our time on understanding observable
behavior. You’ll have the opportunity to assess and identify
your own patterns of behavior while learning to recognize
patterns of behavior in others who operate differently than you
do. We’ll work with a case study, so arrive with someone in mind
that you find especially challenging to work with! By the end of
our session, I anticipate that you will look at this case study
(individual) in a different light: not difficult
so much as different.
BREAKOUT SESSION – Enriching
Relationships
Working with the principles of
Understanding Behavior from the keynote session, we’ll take your
case study to a different level by learning and practicing the
most effective methods for communication and conflict
resolution. You’ll learn how to communicate so others can
listen, and how to turn tension into productive dialogue that
will strengthen any relationship.
Biography - Education and Work
History
Upon graduating from Washington
State University with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant
Administration, I managed contract food service operations for
SAGA and Marriott at locations including aircraft production
facilities, bank and insurance headquarters, and government
agencies. These assignments provided me an understanding of the
essence of management - what it takes to deliver results through
others.
After investing eight years in operations management, I spent
seven years as a Human Resources professional, including: Vice
President of Human Resources for Marriott School Services and
Human Resources Director for ARAMARK Business Dining. I enjoyed
two years with Restaurants Unlimited as the Human Resources
Director for their expanding CINNABON Bakery chain. These
assignments allowed me to gain skill in understanding and
implementing practices that develop a workforce to accomplish
organizational goals.
In 1990, I completed a Master's Degree in Management with an
emphasis on Organization Development. This served as my
springboard to launch into the work that I love; enabling others
to advantage themselves and the organizations they serve.
Professional Philosophy
I believe in life long learning; personal development is a
process, not an event. I believe workplace learning is most
effective when individuals apply principles and skills to
situations, tasks or events in their lives. I believe learning
should be fun as well as enriching; one of the greatest joys in
my work comes when participants and I laugh and learn together.
At the end of the day, my goal is to have each individual in
attendance walk away feeling more confident, more competent and
encouraged to apply new skills to advantage themselves, their
work team and their organization.
The old saying, “When the going gets tough, the tough get
going” has never been more relevant than in our current
economic environment. With tight budgets and your time at a
premium, there’s no doubt you may be feeling the pinch, but
don’t let hard times stop you from moving ahead. Turn
today’s challenges into BIG opportunities at SNA’s 2010
Annual National Conference (ANC), where you will connect
face to face with thousands of operators from districts
across the nation.
